This post is to share some information on McFaddens who I believe are ancestors on my mother Ruth McFadden's line, in the hopes that living relatives may find it of interest and want to connect and participate in this Y-DNA project.

Last month (April 2016), I found a hand-typed, 1982 compilation (about 100 pages, 8 1/2" x 11") of information entitled "McFadden-Jamison Genealogy" in Citizens Library, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Much of its information was based on two other books, plus family bibles, oral tradition, etc. It provides details on two families -- the McFaddens and the Jamisons -- who both had numerous family members emigrate from Cootehill, County Cavan, Ireland to Washington County, Pennsylvania in the late 1700's. (One McFadden came a little later to Philadelphia.)

Most of the McFaddens in Washington County, PA moved to Harrison County, Ohio (most to Cadiz township in that county, some to Nottingham township) in the very early 1800's. There were many McFadden children, and more than 120 McFaddens are buried in Old Cadiz Cemetery. Several of these are written up in a Harrison County history by Hanna (one of the books that was used for the compilation I saw). There are many descendants now, in many states.

I believe my 3G grandfather Joseph McFadden was one of this family, but he moved to Fayette County, Pennsylvania rather than to Ohio. His second wife was Mary Jamison (who I have not yet been able to connect to the Jamisons in the McFadden-Jamison Genealogy book). My late uncle Richard Blair McFadden took a Y-DNA test for me before he passed away, and after I am able to test another McFadden I've identified here in California as from the Ohio McFaddens, I believe I will be able to connect my line to this group from County Cavan.

The compiler of the McFadden-Jamison Genealogy (now passed away) gave permission (in the book) for anyone to copy it, and I now have my own copy. The genealogy librarian at Citizen's Library sent the book out to me on Inter-Library Loan, and she may do the same for anyone else who wants to see it.

I hope this information will motivate others to see if they can connect to this line. Anyone with McFaddens in western Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Ohio and West Virginia are especially encouraged to research this line. Although the compiler of the McFadden-Jamison Genealogy points out that none of her sources are vital records and that dates are often differently recorded, the preponderance of material appears to show a clear connection back to Cootehill, County Cavan, Ireland in the late 1700's -- a rare find indeed for anyone doing Irish genealogy research.

i have a tree link with Mary McFadden b 1780 Pennsylvania, d. 1814 Ohio, m. William Sharp. I believe her father to be John McFadden b. 1746 Dublin, Ireland d. 1835 Ohio, m. Margaret (Mary) Sharp (1751-1826). I am having no luck tracing their ancestors. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Deb Raymond.

Greetings, I read your posts with great interest. My family has two McFadden lines and as of yet, no documented point of origin
in Northern Ireland. One McFadden line was in New England before 1868 and the other is related to the McFadden's you are describing.
Both lines however ended up in the same part of Ohio and then some moved on to Iowa. I recently looked at my McFadden DNA connections
in Ancestry and found 4 connections that directed me to County Cavan, but with no known family connections. I am hoping that you or others can
help fill in some gaps. The immigrant family in question is Susanna McFadden (1771) who married a Mathew Picken (1773) in or about
1791-3. We know that they were on shipboard in 1797 as that is when their eldest child, Jane was born. We do not know their whereabouts
for 6 years as there is no documentation of the birth location of their next 2 children, Mathew and Elizabeth. We know that by 1803 they
were in Jefferson County Ohio where the next child, Matilda, was born, and then they were in Harrison County Ohio, where the remaining
children, Sarah, Alpheus, Susanna, Alexander and William Oliver were born. Susanna is my triple great grandmother and she married into my other McFadden line when she married Hamilton McFadden. At least one more of this line married into the other McFaddens. It is possible that
the missing 5-6 years were spent in PA, but we have no documentation of this. Thanks Bill

Hi Bill -- my 3G grandfather Joseph McFadden, Sr. (mentioned in my first post) also ended up in Iowa, specifically in Audubon County, spending the last 14 years of his life there before dying at the age of 92. Let me know if this is the same county, or near, where your Iowa people ended up.

There is now a private Facebook page, established a few weeks ago, for those of us who either know or believe we are part of this County Cavan line. If you or a member of your family is on Facebook, you can request to join and you'll get approved (just a mechanism to avoid spammers). Search Facebook for "McFadden Genealogy -- County Cavan, Ireland" and you should find it. If you do this, then I suggest you post there with the information you gave us above. The fact that Susanna ended up in Harrison County is a pretty solid clue that they are part of this line, in my opinion. There are 184 McFaddens on FindAGrave in Harrison County, most in Cadiz.

Cheers, Susan

Hello, i stumbled on this site last night and quickly registered. I have researched my McFadden ancestors from County Caven who settled in Washington County,PA, but then moved on to Harrison County, mainly Cadiz, OH. I obtained documents from the Harrison County Genealogical Society including the Hanna Histories. Those documents, coupled with others from the Probate Court, have determined that my direct ancestor was Dr. Samuel McFadden, brother of the Rev. War Patriot John McFadden for whom a plaque is displayed in the Old Cadiz Cemetery. Dr. Samuel, brother of John, is often confused with Samuel Buffalo who was the son of John. I have lots of information about John, his siblings and their offspring who sailed to the Colonies from Ireland in the late 1700s. I’m happy to share what i have in hopes of locating some relatives. Best regards to all, Nancy Linkov

I will try my best to post some of the information I’ve found about my McFadden family after the New Years weekend. Things are a little hectic right now for me right now. Happy New Year everyone!
