John McFadyen, hand loom weaver, Calton

I'm still looking for information on my three times Greatgrandfather John McFadyen. This is what I know: 1. He married Jean Renfrew of Paisley in Sep 1806. 2. He was a handloom weaver and they lived in Calton, an area of Glasgow. 3. Jean was born in 1783, died in Calton in 1855. 4. John had a brothe...

Re: John McFadyen Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland

I'm still finding clues about John McFadyen, the latest being that he lived in Calton, Glasgow. This area was known for the weaving industry and was outside the control of the Glasgow guilds at first. 1787 saw a big strike by the weavers, and a number of weavers were killed by government forces. Joh...

Re: John McFadyen Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland

I have since determined that John McFadyen and Jean Renfrew probably did not live in Paisley, but in Barony Parish, Glasgow, likely Kinning Park. I am still trying to trace the McFadyen line, so far without luck, although I managed to find GGGGGG-grandparents from the Renfrew side who were married i...

Re: John McFadyen Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland

My ggg-grandfather was a John McFadyen, but he was married to Jean Renfrew also in Paisley. You mentioned that your John lived on the same street as his Jean. May I ask which street that was? I wonder if there was an influx of McFadyens from the Isles to Paisley at some point. They would likely sett...

Re: Welcome to the McFadden Project message board!

I have drawn a blank with my McFadyen forebears. I really want to know from which of the Isles they came, and when and where they settled. I think they went to the mainland of Scotland. Would it help if one of my brothers did the DNA testing? Hilary

Re: Welcome to the McFadden Project message board!

My Mum was a McFadyen. The furthest back I have managed to get is to my GGGrandfather, James McFadyen, who was a United Presbyterian minister in Patna, Ayrshire. He died 17 April 1882. I know his father was John McFadyen, a weaver, but I have no dates for him. He married Jean Renfrew (27 Aug 1783-24...
